Don’t let burglars ruin your Christmas!

Can you imagine how you would feel if you discovered over the Christmas period that you had been burgled?  Many words spring to mind, devastated is just one of them.

Most burglaries are opportunistic.  With so many things happening over the Christmas period, it’s not surprising that home owners overlook home security matters.

Don’t let a burglar ruin your Christmas.  Here’s a quick reminder of 10 ways you can protect your home over the Christmas period:

  • Keep presents out of sight until last thing on Christmas Eve
  • If you are storing large items , such as bicycles, in a garage or shed – keep doors locked at all times.
  • Don’t leave your curtain opens giving burglars a good view of your front room
  • Empty boxes from expensive items left outside your home are a huge advert for the new goods inside, so dispose of packaging carefully.  Recycle them immediately if possible
  • Keep doors locked at all times – even if you are in.  You’d be surprised at how many burglaries take place when there are people in neighbouring rooms
  • If you go out for the evening, shut your curtains and keep a light on

If you are going away for Christmas

  • Do not announce it on Social Media sites such as Twitter or Facebook
  • Cancel all newspaper and milk deliveries
  • Use an automatic timer for lights
  • Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property and to collect your post
